The OVO Athletic Centre in Mississauga, Ontario—where the Toronto Raptors use natural daylight as a competitive advantage.
How the Toronto Raptors Use Daylight as a Competitive Advantage
What separates a good training facility from a great one? For elite athletes, it’s not just about the equipment or the square footage—it’s about creating an environment that optimizes every aspect of human performance. That includes something most people overlook: the quality of light.
When the Toronto Raptors set out to build the OVO Athletic Centre, they had a clear goal: create one of the top training facilities of its kind in sports. But they knew that a “winning culture” isn’t built on tradition alone. It’s built around complex social, physiological, and financial modeling—around data management, biometrics, nutrition, conditioning, performance analytics, and talent evaluation. And increasingly, it’s built around natural daylight.
❌ The Athlete’s Dilemma: Why Traditional Gyms Fail
Most athletic facilities make a critical mistake: they either rely entirely on artificial lighting (which lacks the full spectrum of natural light that supports circadian rhythms and recovery) or they use traditional skylights that create a new problem—glare on the court.
For elite athletes, glare isn’t just annoying—it’s a performance liability. It affects depth perception, ball tracking, and reaction time. And in a sport where milliseconds matter, that’s unacceptable.
The challenge: how do you bring natural daylight into a basketball court without creating glare that compromises performance?
The Vision: A State-of-the-Art Facility Built for Performance
Designed by Baldwin & Franklin Architects in collaboration with Guernsey, a US-based firm, the OVO Athletic Centre was designed to be more than just a gym. It was designed to be a performance optimization machine.
To achieve this, the architects knew they needed to incorporate natural daylight—not just for aesthetics, but for the measurable benefits it provides to athletic performance and recovery. But they also knew that traditional skylights would create unacceptable glare on the court and in the locker rooms.
✓ Engineered for Elite Performance: Why Solera® Was the Right Choice
The solution was to use Solera® engineered light diffusers in the massive spherical skylights over the two basketball courts and in the locker room. This wasn’t just about “making it look nice”—it was about creating optimal visual conditions for elite athletes.
Why Solera®?
1. Glare-Free Performance: Solera® diffuses daylight uniformly throughout the space, eliminating the harsh glare that would compromise athlete performance on the court.
2. Full-Spectrum Natural Light: Unlike artificial lighting, natural daylight provides the full spectrum of light that supports circadian rhythms, mood, and recovery—critical factors for elite athletes.
3. Consistent, High-Quality Light: The engineered diffusion creates a consistent light environment that mimics outdoor conditions without the variability and glare of direct sunlight.
The Design: Daylight Where It Matters Most
The OVO Athletic Centre features Solera® engineered daylight diffusers in two critical areas:
1. The Basketball Courts: The massive spherical skylights over the two full-size courts bring natural daylight deep into the space, creating a bright, inviting environment that feels more like playing outdoors than in a typical gym—without any of the glare that would compromise performance.
2. The Locker Room: The locker room space is lifted by natural daylight to help team players feel their best both before and after practice. This isn’t just about comfort—it’s about creating an environment that supports recovery and mental preparation.
The locker room features Solera® skylights that bring natural daylight into the space where athletes prepare and recover. This focus on player well-being reflects the Raptors’ commitment to creating a facility that supports every aspect of performance.

Completed
The project was completed in time for the Raptors’ spectacular playoff run in 2016. While we can’t claim that Solera® skylights won them the playoffs, we can say that the Raptors’ commitment to creating a world-class training environment—including optimal natural daylight—reflects the kind of attention to detail that separates good teams from great ones.
The OVO Athletic Centre demonstrates that natural daylight isn’t just a “nice-to-have” amenity—it’s a strategic tool for optimizing human performance. And with Solera® engineered light diffusers, you can have the benefits of natural daylight without the glare that compromises athletic performance.

The Takeaway: Daylight as a Performance Tool
The Toronto Raptors’ OVO Athletic Centre proves that natural daylight isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about creating environments that support human performance at the highest level. Whether you’re designing a training facility for elite athletes, a workplace for high-performing teams, or a school for students who need to focus and learn, the quality of light matters.
With Solera® engineered light diffusers, you can bring the benefits of natural daylight into any space—without the glare, heat gain, or visual discomfort that traditional skylights create. It’s daylight, engineered for performance.
